Summer learning adventures
Summer vacation is a time for relaxation and fun. It’s also the perfect opportunity for children and young adults to explore new interests and reinforce essential skills. Learning during the summer months helps students retain knowledge gained during the school year. Summer learning activities can also deepen students’ understanding across different subjects. From reading and writing to STEAM projects and outdoor exploration, these activities help foster a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.
In Douglas County, there are plenty of summer activities for kids of all ages, from toddlers to young adults. You can find a variety of amazing options in an online summer learning guide available on the Douglas Education Service District website. The guide lists activities offered by local agencies and educational entities. The offerings include academic programs, day camps, outdoor adventures and teen activities. “Douglas ESD is excited to help families in our community have a central space to find summer learning opportunities throughout the county through our Summer Learning Activity Guide,” said Director of Education Services for Douglas ESD, Jeneen Hartley. “And we’re also excited to provide a series of summer learning experiences for high school-aged youth to explore topics with new and existing friends.” Hartley also shared that Douglas ESD’s Youth Development team is coordinating activities for youth, ages 14 and up. Two Educational Combines—automotive and culinary—will provide youth with an in-depth, hands-on learning experiences. In addition, five different field trips will be offered to fun places around the region.
If you’re looking for more resources or activities, you may visit Douglas ESD’s Early Learning and Parenting Resource Center (ELPRC) in Roseburg located at 1871 NE Stephens St. Inside the Parenting Resource Center, you’ll find books, games, art projects and toys for families to enjoy together during warm summer days. The area is set up like a living room with comfortable seating for adults and tiny tables and chairs for little ones. There are also parenting classes and support groups available through Take Root Parenting Connection, available in-person and online.
