Douglas ESD partners with RPS to open social-emotional learning classroom

Social-Emotional Learning

Nov. 14, 2019 - Douglas ESD’s Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education program has partnered with Roseburg Public Schools to open an inclusive social-emotional learning classroom for preschoolers on Jan. 6.

The classroom is designed for preschool students (4 to 5 years old) who experience social-emotional developmental delays. It’s designed to help the students prepare for kindergarten through the use of high-quality SEL curriculum, small group intervention and parent education. The classroom will also have same-age peers with well-developed social skills, with a 1:2 ratio of students with social learning needs and peer role models.

The classroom will be the first of its kind within the Roseburg School District, and joins others throughout Douglas County that have been implemented by the Family Development Center, Head Start and other social service agencies.

Examples of social-emotional developmental delays include anxiety, ADHD and students who come from traumatic backgrounds.

Douglas ESD Special Education Coordinator Angela Keeran says the classroom is a huge puzzle piece into making public education in Roseburg more equitable for all students.

“We’re not just breaking barriers in local public education, but we’re breaking barriers for these students,” Keeran said. “If a child has a developmental delay at an early age that isn’t addressed, it could have an effect on how they interact with their peers and how they learn in the classroom. This curriculum is going to address those barriers so these students can excel from kindergarten and beyond along with their peers.”

The program is just for preschoolers who live in the Roseburg Public Schools boundary map. It will serve the students four days per week from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with no school on Wednesdays. The classroom will be located at Eastwood Elementary School.

Those who are interested in signing up a preschool student for the social-emotional learning classroom can apply on Roseburg Public Schools’ website on its homepage. The child must have turned 4-years-old on or before Sept. 1, 2019, to be eligible for sign-up. The deadline to apply is Nov. 30. Acceptance letters will be mailed by Dec. 20.

The classroom was made possible through a grant from the Ford Family Foundation.
