May 6 MATP Celebration rides on!

Release Date:
5/4/2017

Today was MATP day at Fremont Middle School!

Many Douglas ESD employees don T-shirts and take up duty stations at the annual Motor Activities Training Celebration, which is set aside to provide fun and affirmation for kids with significant motor impairments. It’s a Special Olympics event that allows the kids to participate in modified athletic and recreational activities.

This year’s theme was Hooked on MATP! The hooks were in evidence at the end of fishing lines provided by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Umpqua Fishermen’s Association. Volunteers from those groups helped MATP athletes fish in a couple of plastic pools. Kids were given the option of taking home any fish caught or going with catch-and-release.

Inside, children and their peer partners had numerous amusements from which to choose: T-ball, basketball, a music booth, an obstacle course, soccer/football/Frisbee, bowling, mini golf, bean bag toss, a catapult, Koosh ball catch and more.

MATP athletes from nine Douglas County school districts attended, accompanied by peer partners and family members. Fremont’s Leadership students assisted with setting up, assisting athletes in activities and taking down afterward.

Douglas County MATP is sponsored by Douglas ESD, Special Olympics, local school districts and community partnerships. Thanks to all who helped make this a red-letter day for the 30 MATP kids on the guest list!
