Release Date:

If you haven't yet signed up for the Southwest Oregon Leadership Conference, take a few minutes now, before summer activities whisk you away.

Oregon's Superintendent of the Year, Heidi Sipe, is the keynote speaker for the conference, taking place Aug. 8 and 9 at the Danny Lang Event Center at Umpqua Community College. Go here for details and registration.

In the fall of 2012, Sipe took a leave of absence as superintendent of the Umatilla School District to oversee the Office of Educational Improvement and Innovation Practices Commission. She returned to her district in the spring of 2013. An Eastern Washington native who began her work in Oregon 16 years ago, she is also chairwoman of the Teacher Standards and Practice Commission.

Other conference speakers this year are Jim Green, executive director of the Oregon School Boards Association; Joel Hungerford of the Hungerford Law Firm of Oregon City, which represents Oregon School districts and community colleges, and Rebekah Jacobson of Garrett Hemann Robinson PC, a Salem law firm.

Employees of Douglas County School districts can attend the conference for free; others pay $50 per day.
