Salute school board members in January

Release Date:
1/25/2016

Before this January passes into history, let us join nearly 200 Oregon school boards in observing School Board Recognition Month. The occasion is a great time for us to express appreciation for our seven-member board of directors: Chairman Hank Perry and members Anita Cox, Ferne Healy, Gary Kinnett, Harry McDermott, Chris Rusch and Bernis Wagner. All are committed to improving the lives of Douglas County families.

We also extend appreciation to every school board member in all districts served by Douglas ESD.

“School boards are made up of local folks who sacrifice many unpaid hours of hard work because they believe in public schools and in the importance of educating our children,” said Douglas ESD Superintendent Michael Lasher. “It is a largely unrecognized contribution in the community, but we in education want each and every school board member in Douglas County to know how thankful we are for their service and for their contribution.”

All of our districts and schools demonstrate their dedication to county students. At Douglas ESD alone, board members oversee staff efforts in a variety of programs and projects, including Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education in Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Klamath and Lake counties; the South-Central Oregon Early Learning Hub in Douglas, Lake and Klamath counties, the Oregon Technology Access Program, the Regional and Statewide Services for Students with Orthopedic Impairments, and many, many more.

Though January is the sole month set aside to honor school board members, their efforts and energies continue all year long. Please join us in offering a huge bouquet of praise and thanks to each and every volunteer investing in the future of our students, families and communities.
